Emi Kato is set to become the latest pop idol. A team of reporters tracks her arduous path to fame and discovers that the writer of her latest song has been dead for years. When strange events start to pile up, the question arises whether the deceased composer’s spirit desires revenge. Culminating in a mad finale, Teruyoshi Ishii’s eccentric horror-miniature was pioneering in two respects: thematically, it anticipates the J-horror craze’s ghost stories that would emerge a decade later. On a formal level, Psychic Vision: Jaganrei may be the very first found-footage horror entry in the massive lexicon of Japanese genre cinema. A true rarity which is still worth watching! (mk)
