When strange events start to pile up, the question arises whether the deceased composer’s spirit desires revenge. Culminating in a mad finale, Teruyoshi Ishii’s eccentric horror-miniature was pioneering in two respects: thematically, it anticipates the J-horror craze’s ghost stories that would emerge a decade later. On a formal level, Psychic Vision: Jaganrei may be the very first found-footage horror entry in the massive lexicon of Japanese genre cinema. A true rarity which is still worth watching! (mk)
