It’s a hot summer day like any other in Oslo—until, out of nowhere, a mysterious event brings the recently deceased back to life. “Life” being an elastic notion in this case: the undead return to their beloved families in a state of total apathy, and the latter’s initial elation is only brief, as the longed-for reunion soon becomes a nightmare. In her poetically hypnotizing debut, Thea Hvistendahl examines the shock that a beloved person’s passing entails. Photographed in magnificent images and excellently acted, Handling the Undead is a gentle and moving horror-drama that will resonate in your mind long after the credits have rolled. (mf)
