In a post-apocalyptic world with The Witch meets The Revenant vibes, young Azrael tries to free herself from the custody of a religious group. When she fails, she is to be sacrificed to a (traumatically diabolical) evil entity. Not surprisingly, she resists this, sparking wild consequences. A fiery, action-packed chase gets underway. Samara Weaving shines as the tough “final girl” in this literal hell on earth. “A picture is worth a thousand words” applies here both to the beautiful gore and visually stunning landscapes, as well as to Weaving’s expressive eyes. She needs them too, as the film characters remain silent in A Quiet Place style apart from screams, grunts and amazingly crude sounds of dying. (tw)
