Highlight des World Genre Cinema am SLASH: VJ Emmy begleitet den neuesten Wakaliwood-Hit Eaten Alive in Uganda, ein vielstimmiges Ereignis, das dringend jemanden braucht, der hineinredet. Oder zehn. VJ Emmy übernimmt sie alle. Wakaliwood, das Kino der legendären ugandischen Genre-Schmiede, entsteht nicht nur am Set, sondern immer wieder aufs Neue im Live Dubbing vor Publikum: durch den Video Joker. VJ Emmy, Star der Szene, macht diese Praxis weit über Afrika hinaus hörbar. Dabei übersetzt er nicht einfach Dialoge, sondern erzählt, kommentiert, verspottet und erklärt. Er wirbt für den Film, fällt ihm ins Wort und feuert ihn an. Selbstlob inklusive. Ohne je mit seinen Witzen stillzustehen. Kino wird dadurch zum sozialen Ereignis, das jedes Mal neu entsteht.

Emmy Batte aka VJ Emmy

is one of Uganda’s leading video jokers. Deeply drawn to social issues, he uses his wit to educate his audience through the films he narrates. More than an entertainer, Emmy sees himself as a teacher. He became an international sensation when his collaborations with the Ugandan action-movie studio Wakaliwood went viral, most notably with Who Killed Captain Alex?, introducing global audiences to the unique art of VJing. When he’s not performing live in cinemas, Emmy dubs around ten films a week, released on DVD and sold in movie libraries across the country. Alongside his VJ work, he also directs and stars in his own features films.
