Young Lok-kwun flees from China to Hong Kong, but when he tries to buy a fake passport, he is ripped off by gangster boss Mr. Big. The kid therefore steals the other’s drugs and flees to Kowloon’s legendary “Walled City.” Here, in the notorious, dozen-storey-high labyrinth of apartments, eateries and shops (all piled higgledy-piggledy together), he is taken under the wing of local player Cyclone—who still has a score to settle with Mr. Big. Mythically charged and laced with nostalgia, Soi Cheang’s extremely frenetic martial-arts spectacle is also a loving homage to 1980s Hong Kong action cinema. (mk)

Soi Cheang
was born in Macau and grew up in Hong Kong. Working his way up through the industry, he was initially an assistant director on B-movies then started working for the legendary director Ringo Lam. His first major feature was Diamond HIll (2000). Other memorable films include the actioner Dog Bite Dog, the Monkey King trilogy, the revenge thriller Limbo (2021), and Mad Fate (SLASH 2023). A retrospective of his work was shown at the 2023 Hong Kong IFF. His latest movie, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, became the second-highest-grossing domestic film of all time in Hong Kong.
