The discovery of dead bears in Norway inspires three students to set out in search of the cause. Their greatest hope is Hans, a mysterious hunter who is uncooperative at first but eventually lets them in on a secret: what gets in his crosshairs isn’t the expected deer but trolls of every description. This fast-paced, technically impressive yet always nimble fantasy stunner was Andre Øvredal’s international breakout; he has since become one of world cinema’s most notable exponents of fantasy. It demonstrates just how modern, entertaining and palatable the rehashing of national myths and tales can be. (mk)
