Pregnant Nikiya sets her boyfriend Luke an ultimatum: either she finally gets to know her future in-laws or she breaks up with him. After arriving at their spacious country home, Nikiya is even more confused about why Luke so long prevented them getting to know each other: his parents are warm and welcoming. However, it doesn’t take long until there are cracks in the friendly facade. This Nigerian variation of Get Out is the latest example of a much-beloved, nightmarish horror-film scenario, dealing with self-isolated family units who have long lived by their highly idiosyncratic rules and (very bizarre!) traditions. The Weekend is the extremely rare case of a horror movie straight from Nollywood making it onto our big screens. (mk)

Daniel Oriahi
is a Nigerian filmmaker and, as he once put it, “a spunky sometimes misunderstood genius.” After debuting with the 2013 psychological thriller Misfit, his 2015 action comedy Taxi Driver: Oko Ashewo became an audience hit. Over the past decade, the Nollywood director has made more than 25 movies. He has reached global audiences with his latest work, the horror thriller The Weekend, which was presented at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.
