Even back in the late 1960s, special effects wiz David Allen dreamed about his dearest project, one whose happy conclusion he was sadly destined never to see: When a real yeti is found, scientists go to Nepal to search for other specimens; what they find is the entrance to a strange and dangerous world. This mixture of adventure and sci-fi boasts the charm of a lost era: Made in 1994 and completed only in 2023 by Allen’s protégé, Chris Endicott, the film and its elaborate stop-motion effects are fully in the tradition of movies like When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, rather than the CGI likes of Jurassic Park. Starting out in the early 1970s with films like Equinox, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, and Flesh Gordon, his work can also be seen in movies like The Howling, Caveman, Willow, and the Puppet Master series. His first and only directorial feature was the sci-fi adventure The Primevals, which he shot in 1994 and worked on until his untimely death. It was finally completed in 2023 and premiered at Fantasia Film Festival, Montréal.
