While hope still rattles faintly in the dust of the Kazakh steppe, mercy has long since gone to the dogs in this grotesque tale of Western-style revenge: A traumatized mother wanders through a civil war-like dystopia in search of her kidnapped son and finds (admittedly not altruistically-motivated) support from a ruthless ex-convict turned torturer for the police. Following on the heels of the captors, he randomly murders anyone who gets in his way—throwing in a little dance here and there. Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s Steppenwolf is brutal, unsettling and, at its core, much more complex than most of the revenge flicks Hollywood has to offer. (me)
