In 2009, the “creepypasta” revolving around Slender Man, a tall, thin and white-skinned figure in a black suit, became a popular scary tale on the internet. It was just ten days after the release of a “photo” of the figure that the two friends Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage, aged 21 at the time, uploaded the first Marble Hornets video on YouTube. The following five years saw them expand the story into three seasons featuring 133 episodes. The focus is on youthful Jay, who tries to locate a friend who has mysteriously disappeared—and in the process is sucked deeper and deeper into the Slender Man maelstrom. One thing is certain: this nine-hour web series ranks among the scariest stuff ever spawned by the found-footage horror genre. (mk)
