Belgium in the mid-1990s: two girls disappear without a trace. Paul Chartier—a young, idealistic but impulsive cop—joins the covert operation “Maldoror”. The police have had their sights set on a previously-convicted sex-offender for weeks but—despite incriminating evidence—have yet to take action. And so Paul decides to take matters into his own hands. Based on the real case of serial killer Marc Dutroux, this infernal true-crime noir from Fabrice du Welz focuses mainly on the dysfunctional apparatus of the executive and judiciary. Maldoror, which premiered in Venice only a few weeks ago, is the Belgian maestro’s magnum opus (so far). (mk)

In attendance of Fabrice du Welz (director)

After the movie extensive talk with director FABRICE DU WELZ and his production designer MANU DE MEULEMEESTER, hosted by Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala

Fabrice du Welz
says that he had his cinephilia imprinted on him by the padres of the Jesuit school that he attended. Starting out making films on Super 8 in 1990, the Belgian auteur has created a body of work that includes his “trilogie ardennaise”—The Ordeal (2004), which premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week, Alleluia (SLASH 2014), and Adoration (SLASH 2019)—plus the thriller Inorexable (SLASH ½ 2022). His latest work, Maldoror, had its world premiere this September at the Venice International Film Festival.
