A World Genre Cinema highlight at SLASH: VJ Emmy accompanies the latest Wakaliwood hit Eaten Alive in Uganda, a many-voiced event in urgent need of someone to talk over it. Or ten. VJ Emmy takes them all on. Wakaliwood, the cinema of Uganda’s legendary genre workshop, is not made on set alone—it is made again and again in live dubbing in front of an audience, by the Video Joker. VJ Emmy, the star of the scene, is the one carrying that practice far beyond Africa. And he does not simply translate the dialogue: he narrates, comments, mocks and explains. He talks the film up, talks over it and cheers it on. Self-praise included. Never once letting his jokes stand still. Cinema becomes a social event, made anew every single time.
