A burnt-out, decaying residential high-rise sits enthroned over a banlieue and its inhabitants. They say people have disappeared into its darkness. Fresh out of prison, Idriss tries his best to leave petty crime behind and mend his ruined relationship with his ex, Mélia. When her younger brother Marvin enters the high-rise to boost his influencer career, Idriss follows him. No Way Down is a tough-as-nails slasher set in a French inner-city neighborhood where the young protagonists struggle, in more ways than one, to escape the shadows of their upbringing. Obviously indebted to genre classics yet radically contemporary, first-time directors Mohamed Chabane and Théo Jourdain Rhodes never let the film’s social critique get in the way of a lean, mean horror romp.
