The Peril at Pincer Point

“Go back”—even the map is warning sound guy Jim Baitte (!) on which we watch him chug toward his destination. Searching for the perfect sound on a remote island, he won’t let any sign—no matter how ominous—dissuade him, not even the fact that a spooky captain has cast his nets to catch him. Film may have been mute in its infancy, but a sound recordist as a protagonist is no reason not to embrace the silent era’s atmosphere: this black-and-white, analog-tinged, crab infested sailor’s yarn does so with gusto.
