Drei Filmstudent:innen begeben sich 1994 für ein Dokumentarfilm-Projekt auf die Suche nach der Blair-Hexe und verschwinden spurlos. Das von ihnen gedrehte und später von der Polizei wiedergefundene Videomaterial zeigt ihre letzten Tage in den finsteren Wäldern Marylands. The Blair Witch Project platzt 1999 in eine postmodern zerfaserte und zum Meta-Schmäh geronnene Horrorfilmkultur und führt das Genre als minimalistisch arrangiertes Urangst-Crescendo zu seinen Wurzeln zurück. Auch die virale Internet-Kampagne machte das für kleines Geld produzierte Schauerwerk zum Welterfolg und Scheitelpunkt für den Found-Footage-Horrorfilm: Ein popkultureller Meilenstein. (mk)
Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez
famously wrote and directed the horror phenomenon The Blair Witch Project. Together with their producer Gregg Hale, they had previously collaborated on three short films. Myrick, a Florida native, went on to co-found Raw Feed, a direct-to-video division of Warner Home Video specializing in horror films, and directed the found-footage sci-fi horror movie Skyman (2019). Sánchez, who was born in Cuba and grew up in the United States, later made movies like the supernatural Lovely Molly (2011) and Exists (2014), a found-footage monster-horror film. He has also directed episodes of TV series like Supernatural, American Horror Stories, and From Dusk Till Dawn.
