It’s been a minute since the slapstick piano trope was in vogue. One prominent exception: the final episode of Two and a Half Men. Will it regain its former fame and glory in French master of the absurd Quentin Dupieux’s latest stroke of genius? Said instrument is the reason for a psychotic duel that takes on virtually Hitchcockian features—and it’s not just the sickly piano tinkling in the background. Caught in this out-and-out maelstrom is a social-media star being blackmailed by a reporter, a personal assistant who must grapple with the whims of his boss, oh, and two tottering tools that are not exactly the sharpest in the shed. The Piano Accident is by no means a yoghurt commercial, but still delicious in its own way. (Thomas Taborsky)

Quentin Dupieux
Quentin Dupieux first rose to fame as a musician and record producer under the alias Mr. Oizo (“Flat Beat”), but by then, he was already writing and directing movies and making music videos. His cinematic breakout was Rubber (SLASH 2010), which also set the tone for what followed: a quirky, surreal filmography, which includes the likes of Wrong Cops (SLASH 2013), Keep an Eye Out (2018), Deerskin (2019), Mandibles (SLASH ½ 2021), or The Second Act, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. The Piano Accident is his most recent work.
