Werner Herzog travels to the North German town of Getunkirchenburg to investigate the mysterious death of factory worker Dorem Clery. Every part of this statement is a lie, and yet there are deep, often troubling truths lurking in About a Hero. Shot as a documentary occasionally tilting into the surreal, the movie is a dark, out-and-out weird meditation on the increasingly blurred line between reality and fiction. Piotr Winiewicz, who is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and his team created an artificial intelligence named Kaspar (after Kaspar Hauser), fed it Herzog’s entire oeuvre, and asked it to write a screenplay. The result is one of the most unclassifiable cinematic experiences of the year. (Markus Keuschnigg)
