Thriller: A Cruel Picture
Thriller - En grym film | Bo Arne Vibenius | SE 1973 | 109 Min | DCP
The fact that Quentin Tarantino named the speechless avenger Madeleine as the inspiration for Elle Driver in Kill Bill has greatly helped give Swedish sexploitation film Thriller: A Cruel Picture a place in the canon of the rape-and-revenge genre. But there are many details that make this fascinating film ruthlessly captivating beyond comparison. The story revolves around Madeleine, who was abused as a child and is forced into sex work. Stylistically, it strikes a balance between Argento and Bresson: virtually dialogue-free, full of sniper zooms and hard cuts interspersed with detached hardcore porn inserts. (Dana Linssen)
