The Fated Hour

Lurking in the manor’s corners are shadows whose inky blackness is broken only by the occasional beam of light falling through a window. The rooms and corridors lie silent, only the floorboards creak as young Florentine wanders from room to room, often by candlelight. In three days, she is to marry Bruno. But before she does, she must tell him about the frightening legacy left behind by her deceased sister, Seraphine. Back in the director’s chair for the first time since Family Dinner, Peter Hengl conjures the ghosts of classic British television such as A Ghost Story for Christmas, translating them into a softly whispering, breezy horror miniature. This phantasmal work is based on Friedrich Laun’s 1810 short story The Fatal Hour, which may have inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. (Markus Keuschnigg)
