Every morning, the employees of a convenience store must rattle off a vow along those lines before their boss, played with impeccable deadpan by Masahiko Nishimura. Assistant manager and the branch manager’s son Sakai grows lethargically bitter in the microcosm of processed foods, until a tragic incident causes the whole pecking order to crumble. Yusuke Iwasaki serves up a gently braised mix of bizarre humor, horror, and social satire—only to come after us with the frying pan he cooked it in. (Matthias Eckkrammer)
