Among countless things humans can be forced to carry or ‘bear’, children, grief and the oppressive weight of someone else’s expectations are only a few. But what does it mean to bear something painful? And how do we speak out in insufferable situations when speech is silenced or what we want to express goes unheard? Amid growing disconnect, in tense reunions, and through characters who navigate the pain (and joy) of parting from those they hold or held dear, these films portray how loud someone else’s silence can be and how our bodies – through actions or inexplicable manifestations – can give voice to something mere words can’t utter.
