Part of Nacht der 1000 Messer
Even fans of psychotronic cinema and Troma enthusiasts agreed that the first two sequels of the surprise hit The Toxic Avenger felt ho-hum. In the run-up to the remake’s release, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz have seized the opportunity to reassemble these stale installments as a definitive cut. And, well, looky here: Mr. Melvin is a small Tromasterpiece that comes at you with mop-bucketsful of gore and horseplay, even though the two hours provide little more than a sequence of loosely connected insanities. But when Toxie becomes a sumo wrestler in Japan and a ruthless yuppie back home in Tromaville, or fights Satan himself, it sets any schlock connoisseur’s heart ablaze. (Markus Keuschnigg)
Michael Herz, Lloyd Kaufman
Lloyd Kaufman & Michael Herz are the beloved masterminds of the Troma Universe, which they kicked off in 1974. They have amassed a cult following and inspired generations of filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Peter Jackson, and Trey Parker, to name only a few. Their utterly independent, low-budget approach struck gold in 1984 with The Toxic Avenger, which spawned three sequels, an animated series, Marvel comic books, a stage musical, and, most recently, a Hollywood reimagining. Moreover, they unleashed a similarly outrageous, shamelessly pioneering universe that includes films like Class of Nuke ’Em High, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, Troma’s War, and Tromeo and Juliet (co-written by some guy named James Gunn). In 2014, Uncle Lloyd was a guest at SLASH, where he TROMAtized SLASHies with his two-day long TROMAsterclass, MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE (M.Y.O.D.M.!).
