Let’s not beat around the bush: Flesh for Frankenstein, produced by Andy Warhol and designed by Paul Morrissey with the support of Antonio Margheriti, was made in sound, color, and 3D—the jack of all trades of international cinema, as it caters to the entire spectrum of bourgeois-gallery-art aficionados and off-the-rack-gutter-fare lovers alike. Whereas you may ask yourself who of them would be more perplexed to watch Udo Kier declare with his wunderbar Teutonic accent, “To know death, Otto, you have to fuck life . . . in the gall bladder!” or turn to the audience near the film’s grand finale brandishing a liver on a spear, in glorification of the art of 3D. A stroke of genius for all—and against everyone! (Olaf Möller)

Paul Morrissey, Antonio Margheriti
Paul Morrissey (1938–2024) is best known for his association with Andy Warhol. From 1965 to 1973, he ran publicity and filmmaking at The Factory and, among various other duties, briefly managed The Velvet Underground & Nico. During his Factory time, he also directed his first solo feature, Flesh, as well as Trash and Heat, all of which starred Warhol superstar Joe Dallesandro, who would join Morrissey in 1973 to film two back-to-back features in Rome: Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein. Italian filmmaker Antonio Margheriti was also credited as a director there, though this was apparently for tax purposes. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978) remained Morrissey’s only attempt at studio filmmaking. Living in Los Angeles for some time, he returned to New York in the 1980s and continued to make films like Forty Deuce and Spike of Bensonhurst. His final work was the 2010 drama News from Nowhere.
