A dad (Nicolas Cage) wants to show his teenage son the beach of his youth. The weather in Australia’s Luna Bay is perfect as always, the ocean looks inviting, the surfboards are freshly waxed. But let’s be honest, the movie wouldn’t be part of SLASH ½ if we just saw people catching waves and having a good time. And so, the father-and-son duo are immediately held up by a bunch of surf bros and told not to go in the water. What follows is more of a psychedelic drug trip than a surf outing, an ever-faster-spinning fever dream populated by gaslighting cops, scorpions, hobos, a surf cult, and many unexpected twists and turns. And in the midst of the maelstrom: SLASH regular Nic Cage looking for catharsis. And he’ll get there, but not in the way you might expect! (Amadeus Mader)
