A serial killer who is as charming as he is narcissistic is followed through his everyday life and crimes by three filmmakers, who eventually become his accomplices in order to get the full, even nastier picture. This shocker, jointly conceived and realized in almost all relevant capacities by the Belgian trio Poelvoorde/Belvaux/Bonzel, was a focus of controversy from the very day of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Presented in the style of cinéma vérité and shot on black-and-white 16mm, this mockumentary is an acrid, cynical reckoning with the media’s economy of the spectacle and, as such, possibly even more relevant and provoking these days than it was back then. The legendary companion piece to Nine Inch Nails’ Broken EP: five music videos, woven together by a violent snuff film backstory.

Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde
are the Belgian trio behind the cult movie Man Bites Dog which won two awards in Cannes in 1992 and was sufficiently controversial to be banned in Sweden. They had previously teamed up in 1987, to direct and star in the short film Pas de C4 pour Daniel Daniel. Rémy (1966–2006) was an actor, director, producer and screenwriter and the brother of Lucas and Bruno Belvaux. André went on to make the personal documentary Flickering Ghosts of Loves Gone By, which was shown in Cannes. Benoît, meanwhile, has become one of the biggest stars in Belgian and French cinema. His many credits include Louise Hires a Contract Killer (2008), the comedy Nothing to Declare (2010), Quentin Dupieux’s Keep an Eye Out (SLASH 2018), and the lead role in Fabrice du Welz’s Inorexable (SLASH ½ 2022).
