On Halloween night, 1992, TV presenter Sarah Greene visits the Early family, whose house is allegedly haunted by a poltergeist. Commentary on the live broadcast’s increasingly unsettling footage is provided in the studio by BBC legend Michael Parkinson, accompanied by a scientist. Ghostwatch is a perfectly conceived and edited mockumentary, which on its initial broadcast triggered countless phone-calls by shocked viewers mistaking a TV-play for real-time documentary. The program also notoriously traumatized a considerable number of children, watching past their bedtimes. Lesley Manning’s prime-timer shocker has remained highly influential to this day, as shown most recently by Late Night with the Devil. (mk)
