Speak No Evil

Gæsterne | Christian Tafdrup | DK/NL 2022 | 97 Min | DCP

On their trip to Tuscany, Danes Bjørn and Louise meet a Dutch family who months later invites them to visit their house. Not to seem rude, the two accept, but soon after their arrival, confusion sets in, which in Christian Tafdrup’s ice-cold social-anxiety thriller Speak No Evil unravels into a psycho-terrorist minefield. The script starts out as a poignant satire of manners but soon tears down the crumbling facade entirely, galloping at full-speed toward nihilism—definitely one of the most uncomfortable movies at this year’s festival.

Christian Tafdrup
graduated from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2003. He has starred in Susanne Bier’s After the Wedding as well as the TV series Borgen. His feature film debut as writer-director was Parents (2016), which won several trophies at the Danish Academy’s Robert Awards, as did his second movie, A Horrible Woman. Speak No Evil premiered at Sundance in 2022.
