The year is 1940 in Kobe, shortly after Japan has signed the Tripartite Pact with Italy and Germany and entered the Second World War. Down on her luck, actress Satoko and her husband Yusaku are caught in the gears of power shifts and suspicions. Master director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s first historical drama employs all the tricks in the playbook of old-fashioned moviemaking to construct a cinematic house of mirrors: a suspenseful, elegant noir thriller, brought to you in ultra-high definition, which may be a subtle hint at how much subject matter and theme reflect on the present.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Kurosawa, Kiyoshi was born in Kobe, Japan, in 1955. The acclaimed director of films like Cure, Charisma, License to Live, Pulse, and Tokyo Sonata knows how to combine topical social commentary and thrills. He considers Alfred Hitchcock and Yasujirō Ozu as having shaped his cinematic vision. In 2016, SLASH presented his eerie crime drama Creepy. Kurosawa returns to the festival with his first period film, Wife of a Spy, which won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival.
